May 29 :: Real Talk about Charter Schools in Oakland

Please come to a Candidate and Charter School forum being sponsored by…

The Marcus A. Foster Educational Institute

When: Thursday, May 29, 2008 from 6PM-8PM

Where: James Moore Theater – Oakland Museum

http://www.museumca.org/visit/map.html

Why: To engage the Oakland community in a meaningful, informative, balanced public dialogue on charter schools – hearing from all perspectives – pro, con, neutral – discussing legal mandates, choice, accountability, policy and budget implications, educational equity, and more.

The Marcus A. Foster Educational Institute is sponsoring a public dialogue on charter schools. The convening will have two parts. The first part will allow several different perspectives to be voiced around charter schools. As noted above, the purpose of the convening is to provide an avenue where the Oakland community can engage in a meaningful conversation around this subject. We are speaking with the California Department of Education, California Charter Schools Association, EdSource, Oakland Education Association, Oakland School Board, Oakland Unified School District and parents of Oakland public schools.

Part II of the public dialogue will be a Candidates Forum, where all individuals running for Oakland School Board will have an opportunity to respond to questions from the Oakland community on the subject of charter schools.

Well this has been one of the most complicated and polarizing topics within Oakland - since maybe the state take over. There we people who actually advocated for the takeover- that worked within the District!

Anyway…we are now finally bringing ourselves together to begin a conversation.

I will be there front and center.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
